Responsible Gambling Awareness Week encourages gambling for entertainment

Bill Robinson, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Alberta Gaming, Liquor & Cannabis (AGLC), issued the following statement acknowledging Responsible Gambling Awareness Week (October 12-18).

"Promoting healthy gaming environments is a shared responsibility of AGLC, and our industry and community partners. Responsible Gambling Awareness Week is an opportunity to further educate Albertans about the importance of gambling as a form of entertainment, and not as a way to make money.

“Knowledge is power – that’s why this week focuses on talking to players about the realities of gambling, including the odds and randomness of different games as well as the myths and facts about the actual costs of play. With the introduction of GameSense, our new responsible gambling program, this opens up a constructive conversation allowing AGLC to help players maintain healthy gambling habits and make informed choices.

“AGLC also uses this opportunity to bring together the industry, the research community and other stakeholders in the field of responsible and problem gambling for the annual Responsible Gambling Stakeholders Symposium held October 20 in Leduc. This provides us a great platform to learn, collaborate, and evaluate our actions. Most importantly through forums like this, AGLC gains an invaluable insight that helps us guide our decision-making and efforts to help reduce gambling-related harm.”
