AGLC statement regarding the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation’s 50/50 online raffle

AGLC is pleased the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation (EOCF) has announced it will conduct the draw for its August 7 online 50/50 raffle on August 26. This highly anticipated draw generated exceptional interest and record-breaking sales of more than $14 million that will be shared with one lucky winner.

Since August 7, AGLC has remained in continuous communication with the EOCF to ensure that any proposed solutions were compliant with Alberta’s gaming legislation, regulation and policy. AGLC has been supportive of the EOCF taking the additional time required to provide refunds for ticket holders who were overcharged or those who did not wish to proceed with their ticket purchase(s).

On August 26, AGLC will observe the rescheduled draw to ensure it is conducted in compliance with raffle licensing policies. Following the draw, AGLC will continue to examine and evaluate the raffle as part of its compliance audit. Audits ensure all organizations that receive gaming funds follow the standards, policies, conditions and guidelines for receiving and using those funds. All licensed charitable organizations are expected to manage and conduct their gaming events in alignment with these expectations.

AGLC is mandated by government to ensure that all provincial gaming activities are conducted with integrity and in accordance with the Criminal Code of Canada, Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Act and AGLC policies. Last year, AGLC issued more than 19,000 charitable gaming licences, generating more than $347 million in charitable gaming proceeds for valued programs and services that benefit Alberta communities.
