Enforcement

AGLC’s Tobacco Enforcement Unit (TEU) and Cannabis Enforcement Unit (CEU) protect public health and safety, ensure compliance with federal and provincial legislation, help prevent significant losses in provincial revenue and guide consumers toward Alberta’s regulated markets.

Tobacco Compliance

Throughout the 2024–25 fiscal year, the TEU, in collaboration with partnering law enforcement agencies, led more than 255 investigations targeting contraband tobacco activities. These efforts resulted in the seizure of over 237,000 cartons of illegal tobacco, equivalent to more than 47 million individual cigarettes, with an estimated retail value of $40 million.

Cannabis Enforcement

Operational since December 2024, the CEU has already made significant strides in disrupting Alberta’s illegal cannabis market. In its initial months, the unit conducted multiple investigations, resulting in the seizure of $1.7 million in illegal cannabis products. These efforts led to several arrests, criminal charges, and the takedown of numerous unauthorized online domains.
