In July 2026, Alberta was one of nine provinces that finalized an inter-provincial agreement to allow liquor manufacturers to sell their products directly to consumers. Currently, the agreement includes Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador. Alberta also has extended the agreement with B.C. for direct-to-consumer wine.
British Columbia is committing to have their system in place to implement direct-to-consumer for all types of alcohol in the coming months.
AGLC’s authorization process ensures other Canadian liquor manufacturers are set up to report and pay the appropriate fees to AGLC for the products they sell directly to consumers in Alberta.
Alberta manufacturers interested in selling liquor products directly to customers in other provinces must first check with the appropriate provincial regulatory body to understand the processes for participating in the inter-provincial DTC agreement.
All out-of-province liquor manufacturers must be approved by AGLC to participate in the Alberta DTC liquor program.
Interested manufacturers can start the approval process with AGLC starting Tuesday, July 21, 2026, however must wait for formal authorization from AGLC before they begin selling direct to consumers in Alberta. The process will take 2-3 weeks to complete.
Onboarding into the DTC program involves signing an agreement with AGLC and being set up on our payment system. Approved liquor manufacturers must submit a monthly report tracking their shipments. AGLC will collect the fees associated with direct-to-consumer sales, including the administrative fee, GST, container and recycling amounts.
