Apply online for special event liquor licences

In Alberta, you need a private special event licence (SEL) to sell or provide liquor at:

Private events: Open to invited guests and members only (e.g. weddings, family reunions, birthdays)
Public events: Effective March 25, 2024, public SEL applications are online and open to anyone (e.g. festivals, beer garden, concerts)

AGLC recommends you apply for your private special event licence at least 14 days prior to your event and that you check municipal requirements if the event is on municipal property.

Who can apply online for a private event?

Individuals, not-for-profit groups, municipalities, and businesses are all eligible to apply online for a SEL for a private event.

You can apply online for a private SEL if:

You are 18 years of age or older.
Any advertising for your event states that it is open to members and invited guests only.
If you are a business: both admission and liquor are free for guests.

Need to apply for a public special event licence?

If you are holding a public event, such as a festival or beer garden, you can apply online for your public special event licence.

Who can't apply online for a private event?

You can't apply online if:

You are applying from outside Canada.
If you are a business: guests will be paying for admission or liquor.
