Stanley Cup drives interest on Play Alberta

With game one of the Stanley Cup Finals on Saturday, PlayAlberta.ca continues to see tremendous interest in hockey markets ahead of puck drop. The support of the home team from local bettors is high with 40.5 per cent of ALL futures bets placed on the Oilers to win the Stanley Cup while only 4.5 per cent of bets are on the Panthers.

Albertans continue to recognize the home ice advantage of the province’s only regulated online gambling site. Since its launch in late 2020, Play Alberta has grown significantly and is the most played and most recognized site in the province. With over 313,000 registered player accounts and projected $5.36 billion in total bets for 2023-2024, the site has captured over 45 per cent of Alberta’s overall iGaming market share according to H2 Gambling Capital. With more players on the website, it means the money played in Alberta, stays in Alberta.

“In a fast-paced gambling industry, PlayAlberta.ca stands out among the rest with competitive markets, unique odds boosts and robust GameSense responsible gambling features. Not only are we meeting fans online, Play Alberta and GameSense have been front and centre at the Oilers’ watch parties within the Ice District game-after-game. What’s more, we’re thrilled to be able to extend that partnership with the Oilers to offer players a chance to win tickets to each home game during the final round and a chance to take home a pair of 2024 - 25 season tickets, in addition to several others prizes throughout each game.”

Kandice Machado, Chief Executive Officer, AGLC

Trends from the website include:

  • For the second straight series, the Oilers open as the underdog (2.05/+105). The Panthers are the favourites (1.77/-130).
  • 19.2 per cent of bets are on Connor McDavid to win the Conn Symthe Trophy. Other players with significant interest include Leon Draisaitl (16.7), Stuart Skinner (13.8) and Sergei Bobrovsky (5.4).
  • This past fall, when the Edmonton Oilers saw their odds to win outright drop to +2200 (4.35), 66 bettors believed a turnaround was coming and jumped on those odds for Edmonton to win it all.

Games throughout the Stanley Cup Finals will include multiple pre-built game specials and Same Game Parlays. Players who place a bet on any game will be automatically entered to win prizes.

Being a leader in the online gambling space means offering responsible gambling tools that engage all players. Play Alberta features AGLC’s GameSense and Self-Exclusion programs – best-in-class resources that offer bet, deposit and loss limits, to make sure players are in control of their gambling.

Provincially regulated online gaming reduces risks for Albertans. Unlike illegal gambling sites, Play Alberta offers player safeguards like responsible gambling tools, adheres to legally required anti-money laundering controls and the revenue generated stays in Alberta. This past year, PlayAlberta.ca generated $179 million in net sales, an increase of more than $35 million from 2021-22. That number contributes to the $1.5 billion in total gambling revenue that’s sent to Alberta’s General Revenue Fund and supports programs and services that Albertans rely on every day.
