Expanded hours liquor service requests for 2024 Paris Olympics now being accepted

Expanded hours at some licensed establishments will mean more opportunities for Albertans to cheer on Team Canada during the upcoming 2024 Olympic Summer Games, July 24 to August 11.

From now until August 8, Alberta establishments (Class A, B and C liquor licensees) can submit requests for expanded hours liquor service for pre-approval. Licensees are asked to make requests at least three working days before the event.

With the games in Paris, there will be no blanket approval for expanded hours liquor service due to the time difference and with several events broadcast earlier in the day. Approved establishments can provide expanded hours liquor services to accommodate some of these events.

While Olympic fans will have more opportunities to celebrate together, criteria for expanded hours liquor service will be in place to support a safe environment for staff and patrons. These include:

  • the event must be a medal round,
  • the event can be any Olympic sport,
  • the licensee cannot be open a full 24 hours,
  • the licensee must be closed for at least one hour before the event and one hour after the event during expanded hours liquor service, and
  • a food menu based on licence type must be available during approved expanded hours liquor service.

Licensees can submit a request for expanded hours liquor service with their full operating name and licensing number to inspections.mailbox@aglc.ca.

AGLC regularly considers expanded hours liquor service for major international sporting events such as the 2022 FIFA Qatar World Cup and 2023 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championships.
