Cin Cin (Cheers)! Requests for expanded liquor service for the 2026 Olympic Games begin

Expanded hours at approved licensed establishments will allow Albertans to cheer Team Canada and the world during the upcoming Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Games February 6 to 22.

Starting immediately, Alberta establishments (Class A, B and C liquor licensees) can submit notice they plan to enact expanded hours of liquor service for medal rounds for all Olympic sporting events. Licensees are required to provide notice at least three working days before the event.

Although the games are in Italy with an eight-hour time difference, there will be no blanket approval for extended liquor service hours.

Criteria for expanded hours of liquor service will be in place to support a safe environment for staff and patrons. These include:

  • the event must be a medal round,
  • the event can be any Olympic sport,
  • the licensee cannot be open a full 24 hours,
  • the licensee must be closed for at least one hour before the event and one hour after the event during expanded hours liquor service, and
  • a food menu based on licence type must be available during approved expanded hours liquor service.

Licensees can submit notice, with their full operating name and licensing number, to inspections.mailbox@aglc.ca.

AGLC regularly considers expanded liquor service hours for major international sporting events such as the 2024 Paris Olympic Summer Games and the 2022 FIFA Qatar World Cup.
