Under 25 Identification Requirements (COVID-19)

Liquor Bulletin

March 20, 2020

In light of COVID‐19 health and safety concerns, AGLC is providing guidance on the requirement to request  identification from a person who appears to be under the age of 25. This also applies to Class A and D liquor licensees offering pickup and delivery services.

Liquor licensees and staff members may permit customers to hold their identification out for staff to review both the front and the back of the identification without staff having to handle the identification.

Customers may also place their identification on a flat surface for the staff member to view, turn the identification over and back away for the staff member to view it.

If the staff member is unable to verify that the customer is not a minor via these methods, staff can follow these procedures:

  • Request a secondary piece of identification:
    • if not satisfied with the secondary piece of identification or if the customer cannot produce a secondary piece of identification, the staff member must refuse to sell the liquor product(s) to the customer;
    • staff could choose to handle the piece or pieces of identification to better determine the authenticity.

If staff are unsure of the validity of out‐of‐province or other identification, they must refuse the sale.

Service Alberta has announced that Albertans who have birthdays from March 17 through May 14 and whose identification cards expire this year, now have until May 15, 2020, to renew.
